    87Hyperspace drives enable interstellar travel.  Ships can enter a space in which only massive objects -- like stars -- are detectable and the distances between them are compressed.  It is possible to drop out of hyperspace anywhere, but it is unwise to do it in between star systems unless you know for sure that you have the resources to re-enter.

    87A process developed by the [[Races:Screethli|Screethli,]] a race of insectiods living in Imperial space.  Adapting the technology to mammalian brains is a laborious process, and has to be repeated for each type of skill to be learned.  This is convenient for the Empire, which finds the technology useful but ethically troubling -- it has only permitted the

    87A vast organisation made up of humans from various planets.  It is rigidly caste-based -- Imperial humans firmly believe that genetic heritage mostly determines ability and temperament.

    76
    87A mysterious third force which has been sabotaging both the Empire and the Tribe for decades.  Its homeworld, strongholds and ultimate motivations are unknown. It appears to have some kind of group intelligence, and to possess advanced knowledge of biotechnology.

    87A vast organisation made up of bipedal lizard people from various planets.  Lizards vary in appearance much more than humans -- there are wiry metre-tall lizards and hulking, muscular two-metre-tall lizards.  The Tribe is a strict meritocracy, and merit is usually determined through combat -- although reformers are attempting to introduce non-violent contests for other fields of expertise.

    55====== Protohuman ======
    6 Created Tuesday 05 October 2010
    76
    87Any humanoid variant which fails to meet the stringent criteria for humanity established by the Office of the Imperial Inquisition, usually owing to physical characteristics which are perceived to be animal-like.  Protohumans enjoy even fewer rights and privileges than Worker-caste humans -- they exist outside the caste system, and are often employed as servants and labourers.  Since the division between Human and Protohuman is not particularly scientific, these cousin species are often interfertile -- something the Empire finds quite upsetting.
